| description | The contemporary rise of the Indian ports is in line with the opening to liberalism starting in 1991. However, the modernization of these ports is not realized evenly in the subcontinent because of the federal and democratic structure that has led to a large variety of political parties in power in the different states. This is why the individual state’s governments are more or less favorable of the promotion of the private port sector. Hence, differences may arise between the public and private actors involved, which will eventually lead to conflicts of interest. The Indian Union is recognized as an emerging country with strong economic growth today. But it cannot be sustained in the long run without a modern port sector which is able to compete with neighboring ports, especially in China. By launching new reforms which aim at the modernization of infrastructure, the government under Narendra Modi intends to catch up the backlog of ports through a “Blue Revolution” at national level. Among the promoted large-scale projects, Sagarmala would have as a main function to support the revitalization of the port of Calcutta and its hinterland. |
