Description
Summary:The myth as seen by the press. Goethe as he is seen in press reviews of Martin Walser’s novel Ein liebender Mann The person of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe nowadays does not simply represent a famous German poet but a myth of German culture. This myth does not necessarily correspond (at least not in total) with the real person, even if it is inspired by this person. Thus, Goethe’s appraisal depends on cultural values in specific times, it can change and it ideed does change. Against this background, it is examined how 73 years old Goethe’s love’s efforts related to 19 years old Ulrike von Levetzow are valued today. The corpus consists of newspaper reviews of Martin Walser’s story about this affair.
