description Abstract Objective The aim of the present study was to compare levels of affective and cognitive empathy among university students of the health field, exact sciences, and humanities. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted in an online format with the participation of 519 students of the health field, exact sciences, and humanities. Data collection involved the use of a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Multidimensional Interpersonal Reactivity Index. Results The female sex predominated the overall sample (74.4%). Statistically significant differences were found regarding total empathy as well as the affective and cognitive domains. Students of in the health field had the highest levels of total and affective empathy. Students of the exact sciences had higher levels of cognitive empathy compared to those in the health sciences and humanities. Conclusion In conclusion, students of the health sciences have higher levels of empathy and the affective domain, whereas those of the exact sciences have higher levels of cognitive empathy.
