Description
Summary:The situation of the Breton language has changed considerably in less than a century. Before the 1914-18 war, the majority of the population of Western Brittany, and of Finistère in particular, spoke only Breton. Today, the majority of the population does not speak Breton. However, the number of people who speak it or who are able to speak it is not known precisely: the most common estimates vary from one hundred thousand to half a million people, or even double that number. I have undertaken to evaluate and analyse this evolution in the context of a doctoral thesis entitled: Evolution of the practice of Breton from the end of the Ancien Régime to the present day.
