description AIM: To present the usage of aminophylline and parenteral corticosteroid preparations in the work in Emergency Medical Service (EMS) of Health Center (HC) Bečej, as well as the necessity for introduction of measuring airflow peak in order to estimate the seriousness of clinical picture of the disease in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchial asthma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This paper deals with retrospective, observational research study carried out in Emergency Medical Service of Health Center Bečej. The target group included the patients who were cared by the doctors of EMS in the period from January 1st, 2013 to December 31st, 2013. On the basis of the outpatient protocols and the protocols of field teams the following data were collected: gender, age, vital parameters, diagnosis, therapy and relapses in patients. The data were processed by using the statistical packages Statistica 7 and SPSS 11. RESULTS: During the observational period in EMS of HC Bečej 9.970 patients were examined. Thus 245 (2.46%) patients with the diagnosis of COPD and bronchial asthma were examined, i.e. 106 (43.27%) males and 139 (56.73%) females The average age of the patients was 63.33±17.56. The number of 181 (73.88%) patients with the diagnosis of COPD were examined and the rest of 64 (26.12%) patients were diagnosed bronchial asthma. The therapy applied depended on the values of vital parameters in patients, most of all, oxygen saturation (SaO2) in peripheral blood measured by pulse oximeter. The average measured value of SaO2 was 93.28±4.98. The most frequently applied therapy was the combination of aminophylline and corticosteroid preparations in 150 (61.22%) patients, aminophylline only in 33 (13.47%) patients and combination of aminophylline, corticosteroid preparations and inhalations in 21 (8.57%) patients. In 4 (1.63%) patients no therapy was applied. The greatest number of patients were examined in the field - 158 (64.49%), while in the clinic 87 (35.51%) patients were examined. CONCLUSION: Although the average measured value of SaO2 in peripheral blood was not low, most patients were given the therapy. In most cases a combination of medicines was used which should indicate the seriousness of clinical picture of the disease. Perhaps the introduction of measuring peak airflow could be a better indication of justified use of the therapy in patients with COPD and bronchial asthma.
