Description
Summary:This paper tackles the reception history of Makura no sōshi, with particular focus on the following question: to what extent does the reputation of an author influence that of his/her works? After a brief historical outline we will concentrate on the Meiji period. The reception of Makura no sōshi owes much to the reputation of its author, Sei Shōnagon, who was perceived as both emancipated and arrogant. While Sei Shōnagon’s personality attracted derogatory remarks, her prose was paradoxically extolled for its literary qualities. We may thus observe the development of a twofold discourse based on both moral and literary values.
