description | Mining concessions and illegal garimpo now affect over 31% of indigenous lands in Brazil. Yanomami Indigenous Land (TIY) has been the most affected. In 2020, the number of clandestine gold washers was estimated at over 20,000 individuals. Before discussing the gold production chain and its marketing dynamics, this article proposes a debate around the Earth and land. Starting from the perspective of political ontologies, it explores what the Earth and land are for the different actors involved. This allows highlighting the incompatibility between states with an extractive economy and indigenous rights. The article also provides tools to rethink certain presuppositions that guide the actions of modern states when it comes to lands where gold and indigenous peoples cohabit. |
