Summary:Large streams of tourists are one of the major problems of modern tourism, especially from the perspective of the most attractive cities and regions of Europe and the world. The phenomenon of mass tourism is associated with a number of economic, social and historical factors. The goal of the article is to present the key problems related to mass tourism with respect to terminological issues, its unique characteristics, socio-cultural background, developmental dynamics, the danger of tourist destinations losing their identity and the wave of protests from local inhabitants. The author analyses the process and dilemmas of mass tourism using the most examples of Bercelona and Venice. The last section contains an overview of selected theoretical solutions and practical measures already implemented in order to counteract the effects of the mass influx of tourists into cities, with special emphasis on the role of tourist policy pursued by city authorities and the involvement of city inhabitants.
