Summary: | From a seemingly simple question—what does care mean in the context of psychiatry—the article examines the opportunities offered by the concept of care for the historiography of psychiatry. This calls for a true reflection of dependency that does not deny the asymmetries between carers and cared, but that does not limit the questioning to the problem of dominance. Historicising the notion of care, taking seriously the qualities required by the “concern for others” as gentleness, empathy…, questioning the issue of the vulnerability of the madmen… so many points that remain largely neglected by historians. This shift brings into the focus of our interest the history of nurses but also a world of other caregivers too often ignored. |
