| Summary: | This article has sought to present an ethnographic analysis of the processes of constructing cultural difference in the co-management of Nahuel Huapi National Park (Patagonia, Argentina). It focuses on the articulation of identity, culture and territory, understanding co-management to be a global-local conservationist arena in which multiple interests that reshape identities and environmental policies come into dispute. The study concludes that communities are not approached as historical products in this process, but rather as totalizing and homogeneous entities that must comply with predetermined attributes in order to be legitimized and incorporated into the co-management process. In contrast to this tendency, it shows how different “ways of being a community” require a degree of institutional plasticity that cannot be guaranteed with such rigid models of co-management. |
