Description
Summary:Morocco has experienced a rapid demographic transition during a relatively short time. Fertility declined very rapidly within a few decades and it is currently located at the level of 2.2 children per woman. Factors of this demographic transition are complex. Spatial variations of fertility levels show disparities in the timing and pace of fertility decline and also in the explanatory patterns on which we can rely. This article highlights on the rural specificities and on the impact of Malthusianism of poverty. Across a regional analysis of the last three censuses data, this paper also proposes to go beyond the single distinction between urban and rural areas for the entire territory. Lessons from an analysis of provincial and municipal data of the 2004 Census confirm the complexity of the link between human development and fertility.
