| description | Background and Aims Chronic kidney disease is a progressive disease with poor prognosis. Chronic illness and prolonged need for dialysis may lead to mental disorders such as anxiety. The current study aimed to assess the effect of breathing anxiety level of patients undergoing dialysis.
Methods This study was a clinical trial. A total of 100 patients undergoing hemodialysis were selected by convenience sampling method. Then the samples were randomly assigned to experimental and control group. The experimental group received breathing intervention for eight sessions in a month under the guidance of a nurse and the control group received routine care. The research instrument was a tow-part questionnaire of demographic data and Spielberger’s State-Trait Anxiety questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation), and inferential statistics (independent t test, repeated measures and Chi-square). We used SPSS version 18 and P<0.05 was considered as significant level.
Results The mean scores of the situational anxiety before and after the intervention in the control and experimental group showed a significant difference. This difference in the control group was lower at all times compared to the experimental group (P≤0.000).
Conclusion Breathing intervention was effective in reducing situational anxiety in patients undergoing hemodialysis. |
