Summary: | The aim of this study is to investigate challenges and trajectories in the process of developing capabilities and
survival in handcraft and clothing cooperatives. A qualitative research approach was adopted to conduct interviews
with key stakeholders in three cooperatives to assess the incubation process at the Federal University
of Ceará, along with challenges and solutions related to operating in a competitive market and common organizational
characteristics. Data collected from interviews shows critical moments, success factors, and main
difficulties in establishing cooperatives. The study demonstrates that cooperatives are environments that foster
social inclusion, with positive impacts on quality of life for their members. However, significant organizational
improvements are required to achieve satisfactory financial performance.
