Summary:Like all names, language names individualise, in some cases they also order and classify, but moreover they represent a symbolic value which makes the name of a language a kind of ambassador. And like any ambassador, it carries a message, but what message? These are the questions that no doubt lie in the background of our meeting. In the first part of my presentation I try to answer my first question: what realities name the name of a language? In the second part, I consider the consequences of the referential modalities of the name of languages on their representations and their discursive potentialities.
