description Muhammad Mahmûd al-Zubayrî and the mistakes of the Free Yemeni MovementWhy have the attempts of the Free Yemeni movement, founded by Muhammad Mahmûd al-Zubayrî and AΩmad al-Nu'mân to put an end to the absolutism and standstill of the Zaydi Imamate, failed to capitalize on the manifest popular discontent in 1948 and 1955 ? Why did Imam Ahmad manage so easily to gather the tribal rural masses against the project of an enlightened intelligentsia ? This article assesses the mistakes of the Free Yemeni movement as seen by Muhammad al-Zubayrî and relates a number of episodes that reveal some of the resistance to political modernization in Yemen at the time.
