| description | An analysis of the role of experts in churches’ reconstruction within urban areas, and more broadly a reflection on the Church’s expertise in the field of architecture, is drawn from the work of Canon Jules Billing, head of Alsatian branch of Caritas and founder of the Association of the Damaged Churches and Religious Buildings within the diocese of Strasbourg, circa 1945. Billing was certainly not a theorist, let alone an « intellectual », but first and foremost a practitioner, concerned about efficiency. In his way though, he developed a kind of expertise. His proficiency was acknowledged in some of the functions and honorary appointments he was granted. Others played a similar role in Strasbourg, such as Vital Bourgeois, whose figure is also addressed. |
