| Summary: | Background: Orbital involvement in chronic lymphocytic leukemia is extremely rare. Accumulation of leukaemic cells, haemorrhagia or ischemic changes may include the eyeball or the surrounding tissues, causing permanent loss of vision. Advanced chronic lymphocytic leukemia is successfully treated with rituximab.Patients and methods: A case of a 78-year old female with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, with extensive swelling and redness of the left eyelid, bulging eyeball and visual disturbances is reported. We demonstrated infiltration of leukaemic cells in the tissue of the orbit. After the treatment with rituximab clinical signs of eye disability have completely resolved.
Conclusions: In patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, progression of the disease should be suspected at impairment of the eye and the surrounding tissues. Monotherapy with rituximab can be successful, which is indicated particularly in elderly patients. |
