description | Service-learning is recognized by colleges and universities for its benefits to students; however, locating partners for course-specific service-learning projects and ways to manage these projects within a class can be a complex challenge for faculty. This challenge is magnified when faculty strive to maintain course-specific objectives while providing students with a service experience within a limited and sparsely populated geographic area. Following Lesnick (2010), our solution to this challenge was to look within our campus for partners. Using word-of-mouth and other networking skills, we identified two non-teaching units
and one class unit as partners for student service-learning projects. Through careful coordination and vigilant planning, we were able to achieve course-specific activities for students to help prepare them for future jobs in business and industry and provide a service to our on-campus partners. This article explains our process and provides both the pitfalls and benefits of working with on-campus partners. |
