description | Aim: In this study, it was aimed to
indicate the importance of pre- and post- exposure prophylaxis in rabies
suspected animal contact case which is an important public health problem for
our country. Patients and Methods:
In this study, the demographic characteristics of 3455 patients who presented
to emergency service due to rabies suspected animal exposure were examined
retrospectively. In order to evaluate study data, Pearson Chi- Square, One
samples and Independent samples T test were used to compare qualitative data.
The descriptive data were expressed as frequency and % also p <0.05
considered statistically significantResults: 1454 (42.1%) of total 3455 patients
were female, 2001 (57.9%) were male and the mean age of the patients was 26.99
± 19.905 years (min 1 max 92 years). 2-1-1 vaccination scheme was applied to
780 (22.5%), 4 doses scheme was applied to 2059 (59.5%) and 5 doses scheme was
applied to 235(6.8%) patients. 1693
(49%) patients were injected Immunglobulin (IG). As 84 (2.4%) patient didn't
require prophylaxis they were not on the vaccination schedule. Tetanus
prophylaxis was performed on 1848 (53.4%) patients.
Conclusion: Rabies risky contact is an
important public health problem in our region. Animal contacted patient with
rabies is an emergency situation. Rabies
