Summary:Abstract Introduction The Study Skills Workshop was introduced to guide first-year medical students towards effective ways of learning in medicine. It is hoped that through the workshop the students are able to identify their individual learning styles and approach and utilize these discovered self-improvement strategies to enhance their learning in medicine. Methods This resource is comprised of three 2-hour sessions with one session covering adult learning, the second learning approaches, and the third learning styles. Each session has time dedicated to a PowerPoint presentation, hands-on activities, small-group discussion, and feedback opportunities. Evaluation was conducted at the end of the workshop. Participants were asked to rate the usefulness of the workshop as well as whether it achieved the educational objectives. They were also required to write the most important lesson they have learnt from the workshop. Results More than 80% of the participants rated the workshop as highly useful to them and stated that it achieved the objectives. Among the written comments, 50% were related to the increase of awareness about their learning styles and approaches. Twenty-Five percent of the comments related to increase their knowledge such as learning style and approach, and 25% related to application of the knowledge gained to the daily learning activities. Discussion This workshop successfully helps students recognize and appreciate their own strength and weaknesses, while developing their own self-improvement strategies to eventually improve their study skills.
