description During the 1910’s, the expression atarashii onna, New Women, spread into Japan through newspapers, coming from the United States. Rapidly it tended to take a negative meaning and referred to the women expressing themselves through the magazine Seitō. The publishers of Seitō decided then to open a debate in two issues and try to define the New Women. In this paper, the author shows how these articles reveal the plurality and liberty of the voices that are expressed in Seitō, as well as their common concern. The author also brings to light the depth of some of the analyses made concerning women’s liberation, and the acuity of this debate nowadays.
