description The work was done in the degraded ecosystem: “Managed Flora Reservation Sierra Canasta” located in Guantánamo, Cuba. The aim was to evaluate the rate of soil formation in rocky outcrop using combined barriers of stones and Agave angustipholia L (common name, Maguey). The study lasted two years (2013-2014) and was done in Lithosols on calcareous hard rocks, excessively stony and extremely rocky, with slopes between 10-12 %. It was used a randomized complete block design with two treatments (I. Combined barriers of stone and Agave sp. and II. Dead barriers with vegetable residues) and three replicas. The evaluated variables were: Depth of accumulated soil by the barrier (m), length of accumulated soil by the barrier (m), transverse area (m2), accumulated volume (m3), contributing area (m2) and rate of soil formation (retained by the barrier) (t·ha-1); others morphological, chemical and physical characteristics of the area were also estimated. All the barriers evaluated showed some degree soil retention as compared with the control (witness). The best results were obtained using the combined barrier of stones and Agave sp which reported an increase of 2.3 times in the rate of soil retention in comparison with the beginning of the experiment. The retained soil has neutral pH, low levels of assimilable phosphorus and potassium and high values of organic matter which lead to an adequate value of the apparent density of the soil (1.4 g/cm3). This barrier constitutes an attractive practice for soil recovery considering its low cost.
