description | This study was designed to analyze the consumption of tobacco, alcohol and other health-harmful substances, as well as its relationship to daily physical activity and sport practice habits in a representative sample of secondary education students from Avilés. Both tobacco and alcohol consumption start at 13 years. Percentage of sporadic or frequent smokers is clearly higher among girls and there are no gender differences in alcohol consunmption. Cannabis consupmtion develops at 14 years and a third of subjects have consumed by 15 years. The next more frequently used illegal substances are stimulating pills. When individuals are classified attending to their daily physical activity, expressed in kilocalories per kilogram and day, although only a 4% are considered as very inactive, 51% of the total are out of the active categories. Mean physical activity of groups with a high consumption of tobacco, alcohol or cannabis is more elevated than those from subjects with a low consumption. There is a tendency to the decrease of tobacco and alcohol consumption when time dedicated to sport practice increases.
