description Abstract With the increasing complexity of residency education, the role of program advisor demands dedicated time and a unique set of knowledge and skills. This resource aims to describe and define the roles of advisors, including their responsibilities, their relationships, and the resources available to them. It consists of a toolkit containing resources, guides, worksheets, a definition of advisor expectations, an individualized learning plan template, and process overviews for advising graduate medical students. The effectiveness of the advising process and of the individualized learning plan through the outcomes of the resident survey is presented along with focus group data and advisor feedback. This toolkit has been disseminated cross-institutionally at Duke University School of Medicine. We are continually improving this resource and the processes surrounding advising.
