description The Jewish question has been a recurring critical issue in the criticism of Luis Vélez de Guevara’s life and works, but until now historians have presented a distorted image of reality. This study documents the distant Jewish lineage of the author and his family—a family that adopted the Christian religion and remained above suspicion by the Inquisition. The new archival evidence presented here debunks one of the commonplaces in Vélez criticism: his change of name, from Santander —with its alleged Jewish connotations— to Guevara.
