Summary:The world of the “madness” is a field which was seldom explored by archaeology. Iconographic and textual sources inform us on certain aspects of these problems and in particular on the passage of treatments resting largely on the “magic thought” with hospital treatments but the material data are rare. However a favourable context (reconversion of many old hospitals) allows already and will give access (if an attentive follow-up of work is programmed) news and invaluable information on the typology of the structures of internment and care before the creation of departmental psychiatric “asylums”. We give some examples here of them in order to show all the potential of this rich matter relative to the concepts of humanity and mental health…
