description Context and background This study focuses on land governance in Mali, particularly customary land in rural areas because of its importance in the development of agriculture, which occupies more than 80% of the population. The Malian State has undertaken reforms in order to secure customary land through their recognition and confirmation. Our study, through a systemic analysis of documentary data and field surveys, consisted in listing these reforms in order to see how they take into account socio-cultural realities. How are these measures perceived by local people? What are their effects? What are the proposed solutions for better securing customary land? Goal and Objectives : Study the effects of the major reforms (texts and policies) put in place by the Malian authorities in order to take into account, if not secure, the customary rules of agricultural land management. Methodology: To carry out the study, initially, we made a review of the literature and exploited the legislative and regulatory texts on land in Mali. Secondly, we carried out field surveys through interview guides with the actors concerned, in particular traditional chiefs, members of village land commissions and elected officials to see how they perceive the measures to improve the land governance. Results : The results of the study show that the Malian State has certainly put in place many innovative texts, but these have not produced the expected results given, among other things, their lack of knowledge by the populations, their multiplicity and their complexity for these same populations who, consequently, exploit them weakly. This situation requires more and more appropriate reforms and consultations between all the actors involved and concerned.
