description The linguopragmatic features of web comments have been singled out in this paper. Using the explanatory dictionaries and encyclopedias, the main meanings of such words as комментарий, comment, and تعليق] taʿlīq] have been compared. As a result, it has been discovered that the following meanings prevail: “expression of one’s opinion” in the English word; “explanation, interpretation” and “reasoning, critical notice” in the Russian word; and “joining, hanging”, “explanation”, and “what is written on a book margin” in the Arabic word. In the section devoted to linguopragmatic analysis of the comment, the pre-web and web stages in the functioning of this genre have been compared, their similarities and differences have been revealed, some features of pre-web comments have been traced in web comments. Furthermore, it has been emphasized that today’s bloggers, similarly to the medieval Arab scholars, often collect and classify comments. In order to find out whether the name of comment (تعليق (or its function invented by English speakers who have different understanding of commenting is more important for Arab users, the comments in several popular blogs on various problems (fashion blog, religious and scientific educational blog, literary blog) have been considered. It has been noticed that readers of different Arabic blogs use the comment section for various purposes: either to express their opinion or to explain the post, ask a question, and make a compliment not related to the subject of the post. In addition, the functions of explanation and expression of opinion merge together in some cases. A special important role of comments in literary blogs as a part of the creative process has been discussed. The examples considered have helped us to widen I.G. Sidorova’s definition of the web comment. Commenting with the help of only emojis, violation of network etiquette, and using the comment section to write a “letter to the author” or to add to the post content underlie our own definition of the blog comment.
