description
Background: The article presents the increase in risk of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) infection among sportsmen, newborn infants and children because of its successful reproduction and existence of new strains. The clinical cases, also in Slovenia, have warned about the presence and development of the pathogen in the community. Different routes of infection, their appearance means of spread and prevention are emphasized. The infection is dangerous, and can be fatal, when the bacteria contains the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) gene. Because fast spreading of infection is possible, the early diagnosis and subsequent treatment is important.

Conclusions: As the consequences of the staphylococcal infection can be very serious and also life-threatening, one must have in mind a possibility of a CA-MRSA infection. In such case, we have to take measures of correct diagnosis, treatment and limitation of the spread of infection from the infected to the healthy person.
