description Aims: the aim of this study is to analyze colorectal cancer incidence in six Americancountries in the last decades and its relationship with changes in the dietary habits ofthe population. Methods: incidence rates, adjusted to worldwide population and according to genders, were obtained for each country from the International Agency for Research on Cancer,1975-2002.Annual per capita consumption of different food was obtained from the Food andAgriculture Organization of United Nations, 1965-2007.Pearson’s correlation coefficients were calculated for incidence rates, according togenders and dietary variables using ten-year delay intervals. Results: two different situations are observed in relation to colorectal cancer. On onehand, countries with relatively small incidence rates but increasing lineal trends, inboth genders, such as Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Ecuador and, on the otherhand, countries with relatively high incidence rates but decreasing lineal trends, suchas Canada (only in women) and USA, in both genders. Conclusion: in order to avoid the situation observed in Canada and the USA in othercountries, reverting the trend for colorectal cancer incidence rates in both gendershas become an important issue, by means of the implementation of Health Promotionmeasures before reaching such elevated incidence rates.
