description | Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the most frequent of the mental health disorders, which have a great impact on the quality of life of people who suffer from this condition. Within the many areas that MDD affects in the individual, the self is one of the most transformed. The self is a complex and dynamic concept that refers to the individual and the perception they have about themselves, the world around them and the future. When the self is altered by the neurobiological conditions associated with MDD, the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors of people with this disease become maladaptive or even self-destructive. Understanding the bioethical debate that exists between the psychological and behavioral manifestations of people suffering from MDD is essential to break the stigmas that exist about mental health disorders, carry out prevention, early diagnosis, and comprehensive treatments that help improve quality of life of the general population.
