description A methodology of monitoring and state assessment of environment based on functional hierarchy of biological systems is presented, approaches to resource and ecological assessment are divided, and studied object is determined. Necessarity of functional zonation and ecological and industrial typology is demonstrated as a basis of regional monitoring and standardization of acceptable anthropogenic transformations. Bioindication methods are noted to be important in the environmental monitoring.
