description | The purpose of the article is to extend the theoretical understanding of how physical activity affects the body, as this might strengthen the physiotherapy contribution in the field of physical activity. To accomplish this, phenomenology of the body is explained and elaborated on, as this perspective highlights important facets regarding physical activity and movement.
The perspective integrates movement, sensation and perception and emphasizes physical activity as existential to the human being. This means that people experience themselves and their surroundings through movement. Furthermore, the article deals with the body as a source of knowledge and how different kinds of physical activities lead to the development of bodily competences, all due to the chosen perspective.
The phenomenological perspective might inspire physiotherapists to increase the level of physical activity amongst people through highlighting the body as a subject. Thus people might be helped to gain confidence about their own bodily reactions, emotions, strengths and weaknesses. |
