description Objective: To describe the experience of in-service education with nursing professionals from a hospital emergency room, in the operationalization of a protocol for glycemic control and insulin treatment in critically ill patients. Method: Experience report, conducted by undergraduate nursing students of a Public University of the State of Bahia, Brazil. Experienced in the Red Room of a public hospital, between November/2019 and March/2020. The Situational Strategic Planning was used as a theoretical and methodological reference. Results: The in-service education actions were planned according to the “explanatory”, “normative”, “strategic”, and “tactical-operational” phases. It counted with the participation of 12 Nursing professionals. The training occurred through an individual approach about the proper use of the insulin therapy protocol. Conclusion: this study may contribute to promote further discussions in the academic and hospital environment, as well as raise awareness among professionals about the importance of the correct use of the insulin therapy protocol
