description This article intends to analyze the representation of the Independence of Argentina in the fiction feature film El santo de la espada (Leopoldo Torre Nilsson, 1970). Throughout this period, the film production was strongly controlled by the State – especially by the censorship laws –, at the same time, it led to the growth of the historical cinema. This genre spread an official version of history and of the foundational narratives that fit well with the nationalist speech of the dictatorship (1966-1973). These films give monumental aspect to the past in which the public could think, in an implicit or an explicit way, that the regime would be the successor and the guardian of the foundational values of the nation. Consequently, these films propose an exaltation of the Independence heroes’ military virtues and, at the same time, they don’t valorize the role played by the popular segments in the emancipation. El santo de la espada is undoubtedly the most popular successful film of this cycle (Radetich L., 2005/2006 : 60, 61).
