description | The Delphian oracle is associated, expressly or no, with the foundation of most of the Greek colonies. The search for evidences of the links of these foundations with Pythian Apollo -existence in these cities of shrines of that god, presence in their onomastics of theophoric names forms on his epiclesis, the dedications to Delphi manifesting the gratitude of these new communities- does not provide convincing results and rather shows the reflection of the metropolis’s apollonism than a distinctive expression linked to the role played by the oracular prescriptions. There however emerges the image of an Apollo as the god of maritime migrations, sharing with Hera the role of guide of migrating groups. It was Delphi’s later influence which was at the origin of the revision of the foundation narratives in order to give a paramount role to Pythian Apollo. |
