description Membrane separation can be considered as a mature technology, and it is used on a large scale in many commercial applications. For its further penetration into the process and bio industries, advances in membranes and membrane process systems are still necessary. Although the availability of suitable membranes for a particular separation problem is the basis for successful application of membrane technology, the module design, especially the hydrodynamics in a module, and the economic arrangement of the membranes are at least of equal importance. Power demand in industrial membrane processes is often a decisive economic factor. The basic relations covering this aspect are discussed and a new multipurpose membrane separation module, which minimizes power demand and shear stress, is presented.
