| description | The opening of new Vatican series concerning the interwar period allows us to re-evaluate the Holy See's position opposite to the French-speaking space in Europe, Africa and America in the 20th century. Before the First World War, the Holy See had mainly tried to use the local Churches to defend its own position in front of Italy. After 1929, the Roman question was closed thanks to the agreement with the Italian government. At the same time, the Vatican began to glimpse new threats to its freedom, caused by the rise of totalitarianisms in Germany, Spain, the Soviet Union and even Italy, where the Concordat recognized the rights of the Church, but where fascism sought to control the entire cultural space, leaving no real function for religion. Therefore, the Holy See is following with much more attention the evolution of the Catholic Churches in Italy and in other countries and is seeking to understand the new international situation, in particular whether it still has to fear the national and linguistic issues so important before the First World War. |
