description An assessment of mineral components and the content of nutrients in sugar beet roots, grown on loess soil (good wheat complex, IIIa class), enriched with FYM, wheat straw, catch crop greenmass or mineral fertilisers was the aim of the study. The influence of two protection levels of sugar beet plants from agrophags (weeds, diseases, and pests) on quality characteristics of roots was also compared. The results came from a field experiment performed in 1992-1994 in the Lublin Region. It was proved that the chemical composition of sugar beet roots (PN-Mono 4 cultivar) substantially depended on the course of weather conditions through the sugar beet vegetation period. The roots amassed more dry matter and accumulated more crude protein, crude and true ash and molasses-inducing potassium in it during the dry vegetation season, while they accumulated more α-amino-N, sodium, and crude fibre when the growing season was wet. Deterioration of root processing quality occurred under sugar beet cultivation on FYM: potassium, sodium and α-amino-N increased in those conditions. The least harmful nitrogen and crude ash was found in the roots from the soil enriched with mineral fertilisers or winter wheat straw or catch crop (white mustard). Alpha-Amino-Nitrogen increased under a higher level protection of sugar beet plants from weeds, diseases and pests.
