description | The objectives of this prospective descriptive controlled study are to determine a prevalence of smokers in coal mines in Zenica and demonstrate how smoking and respirable coal dust affect pulmonary functions. A group of 75 randomly chosen coal miners and 96 randomly chosen metal workers participated in the research. Each examinee had a physical examination, lungs x-ray and spirometric analysis of lungs functions. Forced expiratoryvolume in a second (FEV1) including a ratio of forced expiratory volume per second and a forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) have been measured. For evaluation purposes of respiratory tract obstruction we have used recommendations of American Thoracal Society. It has been determined that statistically there are considerably more smokers among coal workers than among workers in metal industry. The prevalence among coal workers is 49 (65,3%), and among metal workers it amounts to 46 (47,9%). Impairment of pulmonary functions has been found mostly in the group of workers who were exposedto respirable coal dust and smoking. In this group there were 8 (16.3%) workers with a moderate obstruction and 1 (2,0%) with a moderately severe obstruction whereas a normal result was not found. In the group who were exposed only to respirable coal dust there was 1 (3,8%) worker with a moderate obstruction and 1 (3,8%) worker with a moderately severe obstruction and none of them showed normal results. In the group of workers who were exposed only to smoking there were 10 (21,7%) with normal findings.Theminerswhowereexposedneithertocoal dust nor smoking had 100% normal results. |
