description The purpose of this article is to contribute to an expansion of the corpus of early translation theory by presenting and analyzing the text "Da maneira pera bem tornar algua leitura em nossa linguagem" [How to make a good translation of a text into our language] by Dom Duarte, king of Portugal (1433-1438). In the opening paragraphs of the text, which is part of his work Leal conselheiro (written between 1435 and 1438), Dom Duarte proposes five rules for good translation into Portuguese and comments on two translations he has made: a Latin prayer from the 10th century and an excerpt from a book chapter. The aim is to call the attention of historians of translation to the ideas produced in languages and cultures that are non-hegemonic, even if European, as is the case of Portugal, and are not usually included in anthologies of early translation theories.
