Description
Summary:The observation of financial exchanges within three generations of couples living in Switzerland allows us to identify two principal models of economic solidarity : solidarity through a complementarity based on differentiated contributions to the wellbeing of the household and on the interdependence of spouses and the partenarial solidarity wherein both are seen as a financial provider. These modes of solidarity are adopted differently depending on the generations and stages in the marital history. Here we show their sometimes ambivalent consequences on the principles of equity governing the domestic economy, as well as on individual access to financial resources. This article thus allows us to better understand the processes of reproduction and perpetuation of domestic arrangements going against the egalitarian norm that is nonetheless developed by a majority of contemporary couples.
