description | This study explores the relationship between mental illness and incapacity in 19th century Chile. It examines the management of insanity by focusing on mental interdiction. Through the analysis of interdiction legal records kept at the Archivo Nacional Histórico, the paper introduces both the daily forces that influence the transformation of madness in an illness, and the use of disease as an explanatory frame of incapacity, in a period portrayed by the organization of citizenship and the institutionalization of scientific knowledge. The study identifies the excuses and the contexts that promoted the social exclusion of apparently difficult and unpro- ductive citizens. Theses traces how that the problems to follow the challenges of urban life and to accept the economic principles of modernity, represented pivotal connect or sof the notions of disease and incapacity. |
