| description | Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a rare and rapidly progressive malignancy of the thyroid gland with a poor prognosis. The cause of death in these patients is mostly due to invasion of the airway with mass and metastasis to the airway. The local destructive invasion of the mass and the compression of the trachea in a short time may lead to severe dyspnea and stridor in the patient. Tracheotomy is a palliative surgical approach that can be performed after endotracheal intubation in patients with severe respiratory distress. This patient with advanced ATC was admitted to the emergency department due to severe respiratory distress. After endotracheal intubation, the tracheotomy was performed with difficulty and the safety of respiratory tract was achieved. In such patients, respiratory airway management is presented with current literature review. |
