| description | La ofidiotoxicosis permanece como un importante problema de salud pública, especialmente en los países tropicales. Aunque la mortalidad en el accidente ofídico se redujo notablemente con la introducción del suero antiofídico como tratamiento con antídotos, la incidencia de complicaciones, incluidas las infecciosas, no ha mejorado. Uno de los múltiples factores asociados a la persistencia de secuelas físicas y sicológicas es la controversia que aún existe en temas como la profilaxis antibiótica. En esta revisión se enfrentan las razones que usualmente esgrimen aquellos médicos que apoyan el uso de antibióticos profilácticos contra la evidencia experimental y clínica disponible que contraindica su utilización.<br>Ophidism remains as an important public health problem, especially in tropical countries. Although the mortality related to snake bites was notably reduced with the introduction of antidote sera, the incidence of complications, including infectious diseases, is not better. One of the multiple factors associated with the high persistence of physical and psychological sequels is the ongoing controversy about topics like antibiotic prophylaxis. In this review, the reasons that are commonly exposed by some physicians to support the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in ophidism are confronted against the experimental and clinical evidence available contraindicating its use. |
