description | Chickenpox usually is a mild disease in children although it is followed by serious clinical signs and frequent complications in adults, persons with immunodeficiency and pregnant women. In our clinic, among 36 immunocompetent adult patients with chickenpox, 6 (16.7%) were diagnosed to have pneumonia. Smoking for all six patients and asthma for one patient were identified as risk factors. All of the six patients had cough, fever and tachypnea, four had dyspnea and pleural pain, five had rales and two had ronchi. Thrombocytopenia was detected in five patients while high transaminase levels were detected in four patients. Radiological examination revelaed nodular appearance in three cases, reticular appearance in two cases and both appearances in one case. Hepatitis in one patient and bronchial hypersensitivity in another patient were observed as complications. All of the cases were successfully treated after seven days period of acyclovir therapy (800 mg, five times a day). |
