Description
Summary:Frederic Church, one of the most famous 19th-century American landscape painters, made two trips in South America during the 1850s, which turned out to be decisive in the evolution of his art. A great admirer of German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, he strove to convey the sentiment of a well-ordered nature, together with the idea of the sublime. The majestic landscapes of the Andes proved to be an ideal ground to express such intentions and Church, in his canvasses, also gave free course to his own vision of nature. In this article, the emphasis will be laid on the role of those trips in the works of the painter, whose original landscapes earnt him a particular importance in 19th-century American painting.
