| Summary: | The aim of the article is to describe the status of the Romani language in the Bulgarian linguistic situation. The first part presents the Romani language among the languages spoken in the European Union. In certain countries of the EU the Roma are defined as a European minority. Their language really exists in the form of several dialects. It is recognized as a nonofficial minority language in many countries but it is not an offical language in any country. Today approximately 99% of Bulgarian Roma live a sedentary life and are present in almost any place. In Bulgaria the Romani dialects are the second minority group after the Turkish dialects. The principal Roma groups and their dialects in Bulgaria are presented in this article. In Bulgaria most Roma are bilingual. They speak their Romani dialect and Bulgarian which is the official language. Some Roma groups in North-Eastern Bulgaria are trilingual – they speak a Romani dialect, a Turkish dialect and a Bulgarian interdialect or dialect. The languages spoken by Bulgarian Roma – bilingual and multilingual – obey a hierarchical relation and are functionally differentiated. |
