Description
Summary:This article proposes to explore the use of location tracking devices in elderly care in French nursing homes (Ehpad). These technologies are mainly intended for elderly people with dementia who are prone to “running away”. The focus of this article is on “the ambivalences of care” revealed by these technologies, particularly the “dilemma” between freedom of movement and the safety of residents to be guaranteed by professionals. The location tracking devices carry several promises – one of which is specifically aimed at reconciling these two values. The main question is to know whether location tracking devices fulfil their promise of reconciling the tension between freedom of movement and security ? To answer this question, the promises made by manufacturers are first analyzed, before focusing on the difficult appropriation of these technical devices within institutions.
