Summary: | This article brings together early modern science, the Jesuit evangelical and educational missions in the Americas, and environmental history centered in the socially produced spaces of the mission districts of northwestern New Spain. Its argument is founded in the production of knowledge rooted directly in the local ecologies, starting with the cultural landscapes of the indigenous villages that were reconstituted in the missions. It addresses the challenge of interpreting archival documents in direct relationship to the landscapes themselves and their transformations over time. |
